Why does fast fashion persist in 2025, when we know it’s bad for the planet? Well, it’s far too easy. It’s the name brands we all know, it’s the cheap clothes, it’s the quick shipping, and the idea of always being “on trend” that keeps us coming back for more. But clothing waste is taking over. It’s up to us to influence the future of fashion with our purchasing choices.

Fast fashion is convenient, but it comes at too great a cost—to the environment, to garment workers, to the longevity of our wardrobes, and ultimately, to us. We wear cheap, toxic materials on our bodies and create clothing waste that burns toxic emissions into the atmosphere when disposed of.

We really do believe that people want to make better choices, but it’s hard to know where to start. Especially with so many fast fashion brands using influencers and hauls to encourage us to buy more on social media.

We’ve designed this list specifically to help you swap the fast fashion companies we’ve come to rely on for more sustainable alternatives.

If you’re already well on your way to building a more conscious wardrobe, hopefully we can introduce you to a few new sustainable clothing brands that you’ll love!

This guide is a running list of the sustainable clothing brands we swear by, categorized by affordability and purpose, so you can make informed choices and build a wardrobe that aligns with your values and the planet.

1. ThredUp

Why we love it: ThredUp is the largest online thrift store, offering secondhand clothes from thousands of brands. Shopping secondhand extends the life cycle of clothing, reduces textile waste, and keeps perfectly good garments out of landfills.

Yes, thrifting is a key aspect of sustainable fashion because it extends the life cycle of clothing, reduces textile waste, and decreases demand for new garment production, which has a high environmental impact. Most old clothes end up in landfills or are incinerated, with only a small percentage being recycled. Many donated clothes are exported to developing countries, where they can overwhelm local markets and contribute to textile waste. Proper recycling and buying secondhand can help mitigate this issue. It’s hard to comprehend just how damaging this can be, so take a look at it here.

9. Pact

Why we love it: Pact specializes in organic cotton essentials that are soft, breathable, and free from harmful chemicals. Their commitment to GOTS-certified organic fabrics means their pieces are better for both the planet and our health. When it comes to saunas, choosing non-toxic clothing is crucial—many synthetic fabrics release harmful chemicals when exposed to high heat. Pact’s organic cotton is a safe, comfortable choice that lets you fully enjoy the benefits of heat therapy without worrying about toxins.

Polyester is considered one of the most toxic fabrics due to its reliance on petroleum-based synthetic fibers and the chemicals used in its production. It sheds microplastics into waterways when washed and is often treated with toxic dyes and finishing agents. (source: Greenmatch

Organic cotton is one of the least toxic fabrics because it is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and is often processed without harmful chemicals. Other safe options include linen, hemp, and Tencel, which are biodegradable and made with minimal chemical input. (source: The Organic Center)
